Sir, My name is Amelia Stewart. I am the granddaughter of Amelia Evans. My grandmother is the daughter of John Evans Jr. and Ella Kirkland Evans. My great- grandmother, Ella Kirkland, was ½ Catawba Indian and ½ black. On the 1880 Census she is listed in Flat Rock, Kershaw, South Carolina at the age of 6 months—the daughter of Sallie Kirkland and Thomas—It is spelled Thos Kirkland— I am trying to trace my Catawba Indian line. I don’t know how successful I will be but I must try. Does the mantid nest case require winter temperature cycling to be viable. I came across a nice one today while bow huting and thought it would be great for a science teacher I know to set up so his kids could watch the hatching but I was not sure if the nest had to be kept outside for the winter to make it viable or is the hatching simply a function of a time period like a gestation period in mamals. Tonight (10/28/05) we found a large hairy black caterpillar on our sidewalk. It has red bands around the body segments. According to the information on your website, we believe we have found a Giant Leopard Moth. If this is true, how far north can these be found? We live in central Iowa. We would love to know more about our furry friend!

Found you on Google. Thank you for the information you provide. My question is ... are any of the Oday's that lived in North Carolina, related to the Catawba. I believe one of my ancesters Elizabeth C Oday born in 1852/1852 is either part or full blood catawba. We're working on our family tree & would just like to know so I can tell my Granny who her gr-grandmother was.

I've been observing ruby throated hummingbirds in my backyard for the past six years. In the spring, they usually arrive within a day or two of the previous year. I live in Burlington, Ontario. I am interested to find out about their route south. I wonder if the recent hurricanes affected their migration. By the way, it is October 6 and I had a migrating hummingbird here yesterday. Our zone is 5b - similar to NC and it has been a gorgeous, hot fall. Thanx

I loved the black rat snake story. I have at least 2 that live in my garage. I found them atop a door about a month ago intertwined. One is 6 feet long! The other is smaller. They were very curious about me and leaned forward and down to look while I stretched to look at them. My biggest snake has been living in my garage for about 5 years. It allows me to pet it and waits at my feet for me to open the door if it is closed. The big one also submits to being picked up in an emergency (like when the garage door has been open all day and I begin to lower the door only to find that the snake has taken a nap on the door and falls to the ground when I lower it. I will pick it up and put it inside the garage out of harms way. it will procede to climb the wall and rest above the insulation! Love my snakes!!

If you could please email me i will reply with some photos of it so you could identify it for me. Aparently it was planted in 1860 something and brought over to australia from germany on a boat. I just returned from an 8 day trip to the Guanacaste Province (Pacific Ocean site), Costa Rica. I think this is the most beautiful, diverse country in the world. I am planning my second trip there this comming year, possibly as early as January. Our first day there we observed a hummer(unknown) for about 5 seconds perched on a twig in a low growing palm tree. Even though we stayed in a resort, I did observe lots of birds, insects, and even heard the daily 5=am howler monkeys on nearby hillsides. I took some beautiful pictures of the area, and want to visit again to try the Carribbean side of the country next...jj

I found the site yesterday. Commented about my Hickory Nut Trees. I sampled my first ever Hickory nut yesterday. Very tasty. I gathered over a hundred more tonight. There are many trees on the property so the bears won't go hungry. Yes... I've had a black bear in my back yard three times in the last two Months. My question, however, is about a butterfly or moth. I don't know what it is. The image I have is on a different computer. I took a digital snapshot. It was all black and had an upside down crucifix shaped white marking on each wing. For a lack of a better name I labeled it a crucifix moth. No one has been ble to identify it yet. Any ideas? - John PS - As a young teen I worked for three Summers in a camp run by the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. I worked closely with some future science teachers from various NY colleges. One student also named one of their findings... it was an aquatic animal like those horse head shaped sea creatures with the curly tails. Sea Horses. I am not making this up.. they named it Horsey Giddyupis. Of course..I realized...quite a while later..that they...were the ones that were making it up. Whoooaaa !

This year for the first time we began putting out thistle to attract goldfinch and chikadees. Many birds showed up and continued thru the late summer. It's late Sept.and many finches are still around although not in bright color. We saw several banded birds and wondered if someone would want to know about them and how we could capture and report the band I.D. We would want not to injure or harass them. Could someone e-mail and let us know.

Found your site while searching Hickory Nuts on Google. Loved the Shaggy Bark story. My cabin is nestled directly beneath three Shag Bark Hickories...and the squirrels dropping nuts... banging on my roof...are driving me nuts... so I decided to join them instead of fight them. I'll be gathering some wild nuts for snacking. Bam.. there was one now..

It was truely a treat for us and our children and grandchildren to see today. We feed about 30 every year here but this is the first for a white one to visit our feeders. We did manage to snap some photos of it if you are interested in seeing them....Thanks, Steve

I have the traditional clear glass hourglass shaped kind with red plastic feeding tubes but the inside of mine had grown mold and I can't get a brush inside it to clean it out. Thanks for the information on mud dauber wasps which I found on your website. This morning I saw a wasp going to and fro in my apartment, not paying it too much attention, but making sure to stay out of its way. I finally realised in the early afternoon that it was making a nest in my bedroom behind the curtain valance. After it had finsihed laying down some mud and had gone in search of either more mud or prey, I removed the nest. It was an amazing beautiful structure. two perfectly cylindrical clay nests no longer than two inches each. I destroyed them to see inside. There were these small green looking balls and a whole lot of legs, which I now realise belonged to spiders. All this was very interesting and caused me to immediately go online to find out more about this wasp. But what has caused me even to write about the experience is the guilt that I know feel, because this wasp came back and I can feel her confusion and frustration and not being able to find the nest that she so carefully constructed and left for not more than half an hour. She has been fying around the area sniffing around, going out and coming back in, seeming to me to try to ensure that this really is the place that she had been building her nest. I feel so terrible. But I am intrigued at the same time to see what she actually does. I get the feeling that she may simply just start building again, as I have seen her go right back behind the valance. I am waiting for her to leave again to see whether or not she will simply rebuild. With all the reading that I have done on your website and what I have seen for myself, I have come to believe that this is a most fascinating insect. I think I have found a new hobby!!

I've just read about the lizard-head cardinals present in your area. They are present in north Florida as well, and affected birds are male and female Northern Cardinals. One male not only has a completely bald head, but the skin is dark black as though he'd been smeared with tar.

I have heard that hummingbirds migrate by tucking up underneath the wings of larger birds, such as Canada geese. Is there any truth to this?

I typed Humming Bird on my search eng and started going through the sites. My Wife and I have just moved into our new home and for the first time have about 4 Ruby Throated birds that keep the feeder running dry. I told my wife. "We must be really getting old when we sit in the kitchen on Sunday morning and watch the birds dive bombing each other" We can't get over how fast they are, and how un afraid they are of us watching them. I have taken some really good pictures through the window and at times they appear to be posing. Great fun and it doesn't cost much. Great articles Phil Evans

I will be teaching an interim 4th grade for 9 weeks at Bethel Elem. School in Clover. I have put up a hummingbird feeder outside the class so the students will have real observations about animals and migration. We immediately had many hummers. Are you available to visit our class and present a program about your work, suitable for 4th graders? What would be your fee, if you are available? -Sept. or Oct. Your information about the correlation between hurricanes and hummingbird populations is directly answering some of the students questions. thanks.

I JUST BOUGHT MY FIRST FEEDER ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO. I READ WHERE IT MAY TAKE UP TO SEVERAL WEEKS TO GET NOTICED. TWO DAYS AGO MY FEEDER WAS STILL FULL AND I CONSIDERED TAKING IT DOWN TO CLEAN THE CONTAINER. THE VERY NEXT DAY THE BOTTLE WAS HALF FULL! AND THE FOLLOWING DAY IT WAS ALMOST EMPTY! I REFILLED THE BOTTLE AND NOW I PLAN ON WATCHING MORE. AFTER READING SOME OF THE INFO FROM DIFFERENT SITES AND LOOKING AT PICTURES - HOW IS IT THAT ONE CAN CATCH OR HOLD A HUMMER AND HAND FEED IT?? DON'T THEY SENCE YOUR PRESENCE OR ARE THEY JUST NOT AFRAID OF PEOPLE? WHAT TIME OF THE DAY DO THE HUMMERS FEED MOSTLY? DO YOU THINK THE HUMMERS ARE IN AND AROUND THE AUSTIN, TEX. AREA DUE TO THE HURRICANE (KATRINA) THAT IS NOW HITTING THE GULF, DRIVING THE BIRDS MORE INLAND OR IS THIS THE SEASON FOR THEM? THANKS FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS. CAROL

I found your website using a Google search for 'Northern Cardinal molt'. For the past few years I have been seeing a bald cardinal at my feeders, and I was curious whether this was a typical molting pattern or if he might be unhealthy (although he never seemed sickly). Your website gave me a lot of helpful information about what could be going on. Thank you!

I am sure that the Hilton Pond Center and Operation Rubythroat are making real contributions to environmental education, but the poorly organized websites don't reflect that. I hesitate to visit your sites because they are visually overwhelming. The color schemes are sometimes harsh, and most pages use too many different colors and fonts. You may also want to reconsider some of your key features. MS Comics is a nice font, but it doesn't look as professional as Times or Arial. Fun elements such as blinking shapes and flashing arrows are better in small doses. Have you considered using a professional Web designer to revamp the site? Maybe a college class would take it on for free as a project. I'm not a Web expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel strongly that a clean, well-designed website would allow visitors to focus on your mission, and not get distracted by the visual clutter.

We have a large hummingbird population that we have been feeding at our home in the mountains of San Ramon de Tres Rios in Costa Rica. We are gathering as much information as possible so that we may care for these beautiful birds. We have created the Green Forest Cultural Institute which will be open for students that want to learn spanish, phototgraphy, latin dancing. The fact that we now have a mini Hummingbird farm is a perk that we did not expect. We also have a sloth, numerous finches and a beautiful view overlooking San Jose from over a mile high. Please check out our web-site as we are just creating the Green Forest Cultural Institute link. Very Kind Regards, Scott Steele Marina Moscoso-Steele

When a Robin hops across the lawn and gets a worm, does he see the worm or hears it? I had always thought that he was seeing it, but I read a couple of years ago where someone said that if you watched the Robin, that sometimes he would go to the left or right of his original path and he said that the robin was hearing the worms crawling, thus hoping over to them and then get back on his original path.

My question to the local agricultural extension agent about the blue Cardinals was forwarded to Dr. Jim Parnell. He explained I was seeing skin because of molting rather than blue feathers - how interesting. I maintain seed feeders and nectar feeders for the birds. I enjoy watching them.

This weekend while I was sitting on my porch, enjoying the birds, I saw an absolutely breathtaking solid yellow bird, approx. 6-7" in length--he/she was beautiful-the strange thing was the bird was hanging out with a flock of sparrows or similar bird(my binoculars are not very good so I'm not even sure of that species.)I did not get a good look at it's beak or length of tail but I do know it was solid yellow and did not resemble a parrot &looked too large to be a canary. My question is, would a flock accept another species?? This bird was definitely part Of the group and having fun flying form one tree to another & perching on wires, etc. What kind of bird could it be?? I haven't found it on any of the Internet sites I've visited & I don't have much experience in "exotic" bird ID. Thanks for any info. Regardless, it was a sight to behold-it actually appeared to glow, especially in contrast to it's buddies..... Barbara Bryant.

Problem with bees on hummingbird feeder -- For at least four years I have had a feeder in place. Suddenly, a few days ago, there were at least 100 bees on the feeder, effectively keeping away my four regular hummers (and giving me quite a start!). After spraying with water, the bees dissipated and we brought in the feeder. The hummingbirds still fly around the area looking for their feeder. Is there any solution to this bee problem?

I have a good crop of hummingbirds this year, about 25 or 30 that feed around my 4 feeders. The past few days there has been one little one guarding one of the feeders that has a beak that does not close at the end and does not seem to be able to eat. Is there anything that can be done to help this little lady? Thanks, Orvis

We found a beautiful, black colored, Eyed Click Beetle here in College Station, TX, and were looking up information about it when we Googled into your site. I homeschool my 12 year old son and nature studies are a part of our curriculum so Will, my son, drew a detailed drawing in his nature notebook before releasing it and is adding info from your site to his book, in addition to the standard notes on location found, etc., that he also writes up. We found it terribly amusing that the click beetle we had played dead when touched & hence unwittingly facilitated the drawing process! We have joined your nature list and look forward to reading the posts there. Thank you!!! Bonnie & Will Palmer

Hello, Just opened your site and glad i did! I really like these little birds and learning as much as i can as well as many others. Just one question... I do not see many of these little hummers in my neck of the woods (Maryland), I know i am just not paying attention and am missing them. What are some ways to attract more birds to my yard? I have a feeder up and may see one 2 or 3 tims a summer. Also my wife and i have planted "trumpit Vines" along my fence in hopes this would work. Any tips i would be very thankful for. Jason Evans

Hi, I had the most wonderful experience of having a Luna Moth fly circles around me for about 5 minutes last month. I was out on the porch, and at first thought that it was a bird, with all the noisy flapping, until I saw the green glowing color! I found some interesting info about the moth on your and others websites, and found that it was pretty rare to see one, considering that they don't live very long. thanks, Linda R.

A Luna Moth laid and glued eggs on my husbands hand when he picked it up from a road tonight. We glue-sticked a hickory sprig and gently laid them on it and put the sprig in water. We would have put them on the tree leaves, but they were really stuck on his hand! Any suggestions on raising them? Temperature? Environment? Thanks!

I participated in the survey regarding the decline of Rubys, then when I read your article about Carolina Wrens I wondered if everyone else reacted the same as I. My Carolina Wren population has greatly diminished this year. I am soooooo sad. It's hard to choose, but I do believe they are my favorite bird. We too have them year-round and I love their perkiness in the bleak wintertime, and love their business in the summer. The window broke out of our grill on the deck and lo and behold, a wren claimed it 3 years in a row! We were happy to oblige her just to have more wrens. Thanks for your time and your hard work. We live about 100 kms. east of the nature federation conference site of St. Andrew's reporting on Ruby-throated Hummingbird activities...including lack thereof. We haven't noticed any decline in the numbers in our garden, and they arrived on time. For the last 3 years, they have responded very positively to my husband's early morning watering of the garden, and when he stands with the hose on several have been known to come up for their early AM showers. That hasn't happened yet this year, but may indeed occur as the days are finally getting hotter. Another item which might interest you, and I wonder if it might have some effect on numbers, is that because of an increase it seems of mosquitoes, more people have put up screened porches and gazebos in their gardens. We did, and last year while I was sitting in it, not 1 but 2 Hummers flew directly into the screening, and just kind of sat there. As they were blocking the sliding door, all I could do to help was gently push on their beaks, and at the same time they "reversed gear" and flew backwards off the screen, and seemed to recover. I hope no tongue damage occured. I wonder if there have been other instances where screening has led to more serious injuries/deaths, where someone may not have been around at the time to help. Since then, I have erected large pink x's across the screens using surveyor tape and haven't had any further mishaps.

I read that many people where wondering where the Ruby-Throats were in the Spring, but I am wondering where they all went to this Summer. Four or five weeks ago, we had at least 8 visiting our feeders, then it was down to one male and one female -now just the female is left. Last year at this time we were filling the feeders 3 times a week there were so many, our friends referred to our porch area as a very busy airport! We are having basically the same weather pattern as last Summer, with daily afternoon rain. My parents are 100 miles West of us and they are experiencing the same decline in numbers. Any ideas on what might be happening to the number of Ruby-Throats in Western North Carolina?

The kids in my neighborhood bring me baby animals all the time. I have a baby blue jay and I'm wondering when its old enough to fly away? He has the bathroom to himself and a area to least to try and fly in, still not well. I've put a towell over the mirror to avoid any crashes. I put him inside his cage and put him on the patio in the mornings. I only have contact to feed him, so I'll be able to set him free and not to dependent on humans. He's my first blue jay and boy is he different, and a joy. Reading your web site has given me more on what there like and what they like to eat. If I need to know anything else please let me know.

Neat article. I found a wren nest in my fern that I had set on the porch floor for watering while I was on vacation. When I returned and hung up the fern, mama flew out. I left it hung up, but wondered if I needed to put it back on the ground for the babies? The eggs haven't hatched as of today. They must have built the nest and laid eggs in one week, because it was a new fern that I had bought and had inside for a couple of weeks.

Wonderful site devoted to the best of living things, thanks. Question: My retirement is nearing, I am an amature humingbird/wild bird/purple martin enthusist who will be relocating to somewhere from Palm City, Florida. On the East Coast, what geographical area to you believe is the best for enjoying feeding wild birds at household feeders. My favorites are RTHB, Gold Finches, Cardinals, etc. Where should I live to enjoy this aspect of my retirement? Thanks, Jim

Hi! Found you with Google, Re Giant leopard Moth. Thanks for the great info. We found a caterpillar this morning and wondered what it was and how to care for it to get a butterfly. Via the internet, found it was the Giant L Moth caterpiller and found your great info very helpful so we can try to get him or her to "morph" as we care for it. We have lots of honeysuckle, so it should be happy if we feed it and wait patiently. Thanks again for the site and just the info we needed. Haley Price, age almost 7, Alpine (San Diego) California.

My neighbor and I feed the wildlife each day. Lately, I notice there's less squirrels and more Blue Jays. In fact, there seems to be a group of Blue Jays that have dominated the area and for hours during the day cause such a raucous that I have to close the windows or put on the air conditioner to block out the noise. Can you explain this occurance and is there anything I can do to lure back the squirrels and lessen the noise from the Blue Jays? Thank You.

Last year I found a luna moth in our driveway. I at first thought it was a butterfly because it was so large and found recently it was a luna moth. We live in the woods here and a few days ago found the caterpillar of a luna moth in one of our trees. I thought it was fascinating to find out information on this insect that I never knew existed!!

We summer in upstate NY, winter in Calabash,NC. The past 3 summers we have had red-breasted grosebeaks at our feeders in NY. This year we have had 3 males and 2 females. They arrived the latter part of May and they do not seem to be around this week at all. Within a day of the grosebeaks arriving at our feeders the baltimore orioles arrive and feed at their feeders. This week, they too have left. I'm not at all certain where they go after they leave our area. They are a delight to watch and so enjoy them. We also have several hummingbirds that enjoy their feed stations in our yard.

I loved the artcle about your wasps, very informative. I was searching for information about wasp stingers. I wonder if you can answer my question. What determines the size of a wasps stinger? We had one fly into our house last evening with a stinger 2-3 inches long!! We have it captured so we could research it a bit better. We have concluded that it is a wasp. Thank you for your help if you can. I did enjoy your site and plan to come back to see what is new at Hilton Pond Center!

Hi - found you with a google search. got a feeder for housewarming present. Love it. Makes me crazy tho, because it drips from the feeder tube - not a lot, just enuf to be annoying and I can't tell if the birds are sipping a lot or the drip is emptying the feeder. the birds seem to sip A LOT. Interesting side effect - the drip is on to a roof which then attracts ants and other birds have learned to come to and take advantage of the exposed ants. Interesting ecosystem. I also enjoy the aerial pyrotechnics as the hummers chase and scold each other off the territory.

I am a new novice hummer watcher and found your site very interesting. I saw the poll you have and noticed our province of Manitoba was not listed in any of the Canadian regions. Just wanted to tell you that Ruby Throats are present here and are the only hummers that make it up north to us. This year they were at my window looking for the feeders that weren't hung back out yet)in April even though we had an unusually cold spring. I just moved here last summer but there seems to be about the same amount of hummers as last year.

I just read your site on nesting wrens. I have one that has built a nest in my flower-box on my deck. I have named her Charlotte. My concern is that once the eggs hatch (probably in 4-5 days) their noise will attract a roaming cat in the neighborhood. My question is: Can I move her nest to a higher place without her abandoning it?

I found a blue Jay nest with initial four offspring. The oldest one seems very aggressive toward the younger three. He/she droved all of them one after another off the nest before they flagged. The first one I found wad dead. I paid more attention to the whole family afterward. The second one was either dead or lost after fell off from the nest. The third one was lucky. I put it back to the nest. However it didn't have a chance staying in the nest. I found it below the nest on the ground again next day. So I had to raise it by myself. Is it possible that I can have some info to raise this poor abandoned little blue jay?

Hi. First, I googled "blue jay chicks" to find you. Second, my story & question. We saw the bluejay in nest in a rhododendrum outside out kitchen window on May 9th. We enjoyed watching, especially as the 5 chicks were born and grew. But in the heatwave we're having (today is June 12th), three chicks have died in the nest (about 3 days ago), and yesterday a fourth dropped to the ground and we haven't seen it again. The fifth must have dropped, too -- the last two sat 'way out on branches, I suppose to avoid the nest. I just saw the fifth flapping in a mountain laurel nearby, and a parent came and fed it. Here's my question: never being a birder, I did nothing to help these birds. Is there something I should have done?

Somehow, my two boys have "scared" four blue jay nestlings out of their nest with a soccer ball. I'm not quite clear if the original nest is still in the tree or not. The parents are still hanging around. If we make a new nest out of a fairly large hanging basket lined with spanish moss and hang it high in the same tree, do you think the parents will take care of them again?

This is exciting to say the least. If you were to come to OK. for a hummingbird day, you could stop over in Ark. on your way. What fun that would be. I invite you to our 12 acres with a natural creek running through for a Day of Birding and perhapes we could all benifit from your visit. I have seen the large woodpecker on our land. But was not wise enough in birding to notice if the bill was white or not. The bird was so large and pre-historic looking that I quickly got off the phone for a longer look.

In February, I'd noticed what I thought was a couple of English House Sparrows nesting in a wren house on my porch. As I've had a number of this species nesting in the ivy near my porch, I turned the house upside down while the birds were out. Now I'm thinking the birds were actually Carolina Wrens. I've had wrens hanging around my ivy, porch, gardens for a number of years. I believe they were living in the ivy until the English House Sparrows began living there last year. The reason I'm thinking that the birds in the house were actually wrens is because I got a glimpse of one of the birds living in the house before I turned it over and in retrospect I remember that it looked like a Carolina Wren (white band behind eye), and they began building a nest in one of my houseplants on the porch over the past few weeks. This must have been one of many of their nests as there's been no activity in about a week. Probably had a better site as the *&%@!! English House Sparrows have been building a nest in the bird bottle on the porch within several feet of the houseplant. I've since upturned the wren house. Haven't disturbed the comfy home they built in that house. I'm hoping they'll return, but I fear that my intrusion has put them off. Any advice?

Observed very quickly on second-story deck rail near planter with sunflower seeds a bird that was mockingbird in size and shape. Striking in coloration -- dark on top, sleek white underbelly with bright rose-pink ovals under winds. Coloring very smooth and distinct. Doesn't match grosbeak photos and colors brighter and more distinct than towhee photos. Can you help with ID? Thank you, Tom Hashem Glastonbury, CT (Future SC resident)

After having planted a number of rhodos and azaleas to recreate an understory under a row of huge magnolias this Spring, I was most interested to see your essay on the native azaleas. You know how it is--once you learn about something, you start to see them everywhere. Thanks for the additional look! I might have to track down some of those varieties for my next round of planting next Fall. I'm too busy to be a regular, but I do drop in from the carolina birds list periodically.

My husband roy and I have been hooked on backyard bird watching for 9 years now, and I especially, am constantly on the lookout for "out of the ordinary", and to my surprise, yesterday April 23,2005, I looked out the window at the birdfeeder and saw a bird I did not recognize, except for pictures I have seen in my Birds and Bloom magazines, a Rose Breasted Grosbeak! And this morning he is still here, and my husband took lots of pictures and we're hoping they are good and clear, it is sunny so they should be,we have a digital camera,so we'll know shortly. And now my question is this, is it unusual that he is in our area, and could I be so lucky that he will stay for the summer? Thanks for your time. P.S. saw our first male ruby throated hummingbird yesterday also, so I was doubly blessed by the sight of these 2 birds

What looks like a junco, but has a yellow patch just above the tailfeathers? Sighted in Athens, GA 4-21-05, in a wooded area next to a parking lot. He was flitting about leaves as if eating. Had the white tail bars and white breast. I didn't have field glasses, and couldn't see him well with the naked eye. (I am not a birder, as you can see!)

Found you on Google. searching for information about woody plants that I have growing in my back wooded acres. Turns out to be wild azaleas. White with red to pink color. It has a wonderful fragrance like a blue hyacinth. I also would like to say that last year I saw a painted bunting on one of my many feeders . After much excitement and running to my computer to search for information on the identity of this colorful bird, I found a bird watchers site with photos. I still keep looking and hoping to see it again. I have a growing population of hummers each year. I keep several hummer feeders and plant things to encourage them to visit. I read on your site to plant red trumpet vines. My search for the plant will begin tomorrow. I will plant them opposite the corner of the yard from the ever creeping honeysuckle.

Last week i noticed a Blue Jay had built a nest in a pine tree directly below my second story deck. This week she laid two eggs and stayed close to the nest for the first day. She seemed to be gone alot the second day and today i noticed one egg missing and a few hours later the other one was gone also. I have never seen any "predators" in or around this tree so does anyone know if Blue Jays can move their eggs to a different location? I was out of town when the nest was built and wondered if after noticing how close the nest was to me (2-3 feet)she may have felt threatened.

I'm enjoying your website! I'm researching traditions of hunting in the U.S. and have come across the term "side hunt" in connection with the Christmas season. Are you familiar with the term? I have seen it only in a negative connotation, as when hunters team up to kill everything in sight...birds, animals, etc....and whoever kills the most, wins. But I'm not sure that's the whole definition. I've asked around among hunters and gun enthusiasts I know, but they haven't heard of a "side hunt." Any light you can shed on this for me is most appreciated! Sincerely, Kerrie Hollihan Cincinnati, Ohio

i have loved monarchs since childhood. i now have 1 swamp milkweed that survived from 3 plants. i have just bought 5 more. do you have any idea where i can get the 'wild' seed of asclepias? i live about a mile from a small river and could probably get some, but i have NO idea what it looks like in the wild, and the river bank is basically mowed all summer. and i don't want to go too deep into the woods and get lost. could you point me in the right direction. thank you and its a great site. i will bring my grandchildren back here. kathy

I have a pair of barred owls living in the woods behind my house. It is so much fun watching them and listening to them. The crows appear to bother them ie. dive bomb them, squack at them. Can they harm the owls? One day 2 crows were bothering the owl as he was chasing a squirrel. This was all within 10 feet of my deck. I feel so fortunate to be able to share my yard with these fascinating creatures! Judy

We bought the house last July and I can't wait to see how it does in the spring and summer, the leaves are already peeking robustly.

Hi there! I enjoyed seeing the Purple Martin complex! Best of luck! ...I was just reading about Operation Ruby Throat!!! What a wonderful adventure!! The whole trip sounds so exciting! I think I read that you have ideas about funding...as a first grade teacher, $$ is an issue. I would LOVE to go, but would need some ideas about grants and any additional suggestions. Any idea about how much airfare would be? (I would be a hard worker! I have been lucky enough to attend an Educator of Excellence teacher trek to Maine several summers ago thru our NC Museum of Natural Sciences where we were required to crew a 151 foot sailing schooner as part of our studies! This experience was life changing!! ...but the cost was so much less than yours, as these trips are subsidized by museum donations. Anyway, if you get a chance, I would love some further information!! Thanks, in advance, for any info. you can send!! I look forward to hearing from you! Fondly, SueDew PS hope your eyes are improving and improving!! Bye!
