FLEDGLING BIRDS:
LOOKING THEIR AGE

When this fledgling bird from Hilton Pond Center matures, it will have a deep red eye, and its entire head and bib, wings, and tail will be jet black (see below). Its flanks will be rusty colored--some folks might call them "rufous." Indeed, the bird in the photo above is a juvenile male Eastern Towhee, formerly Rufous-sided Towhee. If he were a female, she would end up being dark brown where he is black.
