Table #4:

(28 June 1982 through 10 June 2022)

Purple Finch, unknown age and sex

Purple Finch, Female or Juvenile Male,
Haemorhous purpureus

Although more than 76,000 birds have been banded since 1982 at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History, only ten birds banded elsewhere--all finches--have been recaptured and released at the site, as shown by the table and map below. This is a very low number but might be expected because there are so few active banders nearby in the Carolinas.

AGE KEY
  • L = Local (bird was hatched locally and banded as a nestling, or as a fledgling incapable of sustained flight)
  • HY = Hatch Year (bird was hatched in the current year)
  • AHY = After Hatch Year (bird was hatched in a previous but unknown year)
  • 2Y = Second Year (bird was hatched in the preceding year)
  • A2Y = After Second Year (bird was hatched not the preceding year but sometime prior to that; follow same formula for A3Y, A4Y, etc.)
  • U = Unknown (bird's age could not be determined; usually used in fall when HY birds are indistinguishable from adults)
