After completion of Davey Tree's clearing of the underground right-of-way at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History, two trenching crews from Pike Electric arrived to bury the cable. The crews, led by father-and-son foremen Nelson and Bobby Cope, were also alerted by Duke Energy that the installation required special care to avoid undue damage to habitats and vegetation.
Although a mechanical trencher, complete with blade and backhoe, is a sizable machine, the Copes were able to "thread the needle" through the narrow right-of-way. After using a trencher to roll out 1,000 feet of underground cable, they retraced the path to dig a continuous four-foot-deep trench--all without de-barking a single tree along the route that for some stretches was hemmed in by vegetation on both sides.
