HILTON POND CENTER GETS ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE UNDERGROUND POWER INSTALLATION
Part 8

Work on underground power at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History was nearly complete when the 1,000-foot line was connected to transformer poles at either end--one across DeVinney Road and the other at the west end of the property. The last remaining tasks were to switch power over to the underground circuit, and then cut and remove the aerial lines. The latter operation involved six power poles, four of which could be accessed by bucket truck, but two of which had to be climbed. Foreman Ty Wolf and other Pike Electric employees again were careful to avoid damaging vegetation when cutting and removing the aerial line.

Pike Electric, subcontractor to Duke Power, finished up the conversion to underground power at Hilton Pond Center by using bucket truck and and climbing gear to cut and remove the aerial line after service had been switched over.

As wise stewards of our natural resources, Pike Electric saved all wire, connections, and other parts from the aerial line. Fittings and wire in workable condition are to be re-used on new jobs, while other materials will be sold for scrap and recycled.

A Pike Electric worker rolls up one of three long aerial cables that were salvaged from the conversion to underground power at Hilton Pond Center.

And so, at 11:35 a.m. on 14 March 2000, the last piece of aerial wire was rolled and stowed on a Pike Electric truck, finishing up the installation of underground power at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History.
