In August 2003, this fully albinistic Virginia Opossum, Didelphis virginiana, was dining each evening on cat food at the home of photographer Charles Lee of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. Note the complete absence of melanin (black) pigment in the pelt, as well as in the ears, nose, feet, and tail. Even the pink skin shows through the loose fur. The 'possum's various body parts appear pink because red-colored hemoglobin in the capillaries isn't being masked by darker pigments.

This section contains ORIGINAL photographs of flora, fauna, habitats, and phenomena from the Piedmont of the eastern United States, as contributed through the Nature Study Network or directly to Hilton Pond Center by other nature enthusiasts.

If you have photos you would like to share and they were taken within the Piedmont Region, you can submit them as JPEG attachments to the Webmaster. (Note that the eastern Piedmont stretches from New York to Alabama.)

Please submit only ORIGINAL photos that do not appear elsewhere on the Web, and be sure to include the name of the photographer, date and location of photograph, and some interesting anecdotal information about the photo's contents.

Photographers retain all copyrights to photos they submit. Photos posted in the Contributors' Gallery may be cropped, re-sized, and sharpened as needed before being posted on the Hilton Pond Web site. Please do not submit photos that are tiny, out of focus, or otherwise unusable.
