In August 2003, this fully albinistic Virginia Opossum, Didelphis virginiana, was dining each evening on cat food at the home of photographer Charles Lee of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. Note the complete absence of melanin (black) pigment in the pelt, as well as in the ears, nose, feet, and tail. Even the pink skin shows through the loose fur. The 'possum's various body parts appear pink because red-colored hemoglobin in the capillaries isn't being masked by darker pigments. |
