GRAY CATBIRD Dumetella carolinensis All photos & text © Hilton Pond Center |
The Gray Catbird (Mimidae: Dumetella carolinensis) is a Neotropical migrant in the Mimic Thrush Family. Sexes are alike, with a gray body, black cap, and bright rufous undertail coverts. Gray Catbirds are the tenth most commonly banded bird at Hilton Pond Center and are most likely to be seen during spring migration. No nests have been found on-site, but females captured with brood patches in mid-summer imply local breeding. Although they occasionally winter in the Piedmont, none have been captured at Hilton Pond Center between mid-December and early April.
