The Summer Tanager (Cardinalidae: Piranga rubra) is a Neotropical migrant in the Cardinal Family (formerly placed in the Tanager Family, Thraupidae). Adult males are completely red, while females and hatch-year males (photo below) are greenish yellow. Second-year males often exhibit various combinations of adult and juvenile feathers (top two photos above). The crissum (undertail coverts) in young males is often brighter yellow or even orangish compared to that of females.
Although Summer Tanagers are uncommon at Hilton Pond Center, they are much more likely between 1 July and the end of fall migration (see table below). Females with brood patches have been caught in spring and early summer, implying local breeding.
