This section is devoted to weekly updates about phenology at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History. "Phenology" is the study of change in nature--including the unfolding of seasons and the sometimes subtle ways in which plants, animals, and habitats respond to different photoperiods, variations in temperature, and other biotic and abiotic factors. All text, maps, charts & photos © Hilton Pond Center Each week we post the interesting story of some plant, animal, or phenomenon and include numerous color photographs that entertain, educate, and delight the eye. (For example, see the Hummingbird Clearwing moth and Tiger Swallowtail butterfly, above, nectaring on Swamp Milkweed growing at the pond's edge.) Many classroom and nature center educators use This Week at Hilton Pond as an authoritative reference source or for curriculum enrichment, and we hear frequently from "students" of ALL ages pre-school through senior citizens that This Week is among the most entertaining and informative nature writing available anywhere--on-line or in print.
